Materials Processing: Course Description

This course is concerned with the use of materials science and engineering principles to find efficient and financially viable ways to mass produce solid material within given parameters. The parameters may require that the production processes produce material at a certain rate or with a certain structure or shape. Specific course topics include turbulence, casting, cost modeling, Newtonian fluids, sintering, dimensional analysis, radiation, energy conservation, heat flow and vapor phase transport among others. The course is designed for materials science and engineering students. A fundamental understanding of materials science is encouraged prior to taking this course. Professors Adam Powell IV and Randolph Kirchain taught the actual undergraduate MIT course in lecture and recitation-style formats.

This OpenCourseWare contains the course curriculum, lecture slides and notes, recitation notes, assignments and solutions, practice problems and solutions, tests and solutions, the final exam, links to topic-specific websites, additional reading and study material and ABET accreditation information. If you're interested in taking this free course, visit the processing of materials course page.
