Managing and Volunteering in the Non-Profit Sector: Course Description

While business administration strategies usually focus on for-profit firms, the same business principles can be applied to the management and structural organization problems found in the non-profit sector. This free lecture course applies business management analysis to non-profit organizations that provide medical aid, higher education and other social services. This OpenCourseWare, led by Professor Paul Osterman, introduced non-profit management using case studies. Special attention was paid to institutional values, organizational change and external stakeholders. The original course included class projects set-up to analyze a current management challenge of an area non-profit and to provide a solution by applying theories learned in class meetings. This non-profit management class is part of a Masters of Business Administration degree program.

This free OpenCourseWare provides lecture notes, a list of course readings and assignment outlines. To view class materials and start learning more about organizations of non-profit, visit the management and the non-profit sector: the challenges course page.
