Improving Understanding and Collaboration Among First Responders: Course Description

During a crisis situation, like a flood or a terrorist attack, the public relies on emergency medical technicians, firefighters, law enforcement officers and others in first-response public health positions to help control the situation. This OpenCourseWare provided by Johns Hopkins University's School of Public Health focuses on the chain of events following an emergency situation. The way public health responders react, their priorities upon arriving at the scene and the training they receive are all outlined in this course. Students learn about the changes in public health training since 9/11 and the practical effects of this change, including improvements in response time and coordination. Communication in crisis situations and how public health workers collaborate to control emergencies are also introduced. Johns Hopkins University's Center for Public Health Preparedness (CPHP) instructor and training specialist Cindy Parker, M.D., M.P.H. and other faculty members teach this course about the way first responders to a public health situation work together to save lives.

This courses provides lectures, notes and an audio accompaniment to enhance the learning experience, all of which are available online. To take this free OpenCourseWare, visit the improving understanding and collaboration among first responders course page.
