Smashing the Iron Rice Bowl: Chinese East Asia: Course Description

'Smashing the Iron Rice Bowl: Chinese East Asia' is taught by Professor Peter C. Perdue and is designed for students with in interest in Chinese East Asia. The course highlights radical changes that took place in China during the 19th and 20th centuries and how these changes affected the Chinese people. Students will read personal narratives and watch films that echo some of the concerns of the Chinese people during this period of extreme change. Materials will be examined within this historical context, such as films and selected readings. The course concludes with a mid-term exam, final paper and response papers.
