Database Systems: Course Description
Database systems are an integral component to the field of computer science and continue to become increasingly essential to today's computer-driven world. Taught by Professor Samuel Madden, this graduate level OpenCourseWare offered by MIT covers the basics of database systems through a series of readings and lecture notes. This free course will include topics such as data models, database and schema design, query optimization and cost estimation. XML queries and the variety of databases in use and their applications will also be covered. Students can expect to gain an understanding of both the practical use of, and theory behind, database systems. Students will work through problem set homework assignments and take practice tests. Graduate students interested in expanding their skills in the electrical engineering and computer science fields will gain valuable preparation for a master's degree in either of those areas. To prepare for this course, MIT recommends taking their OpenCourseWare in Computer Systems Engineering.
This OpenCourseWare offers the relevant lecture notes, homework assignments and sample tests online. For more information on this free course, visit MIT's database systems course home page.
