Computing and Data Analysis for Environmental Applications: Course Description

The lecturer for this free course, 'Computing and Data Analysis for Environmental Applications,' is Professor Dennis McLaughlin from the MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The primary objective of this course is to develop students' knowledge and skills for understanding and analyzing data gathered in labs and in the field. The course focuses on the use of computers in data and probability analysis. The course begins with a study of probability and its role in illustrating uncertainty and as a measuring tool for describing the real world. Subsequent lectures will cover a variety of additional topics, including risk assessments, descriptive statistics, random variables and probability distributions and populations and samples. Students will analyze variance and study linear regression methods as they learn how to interpret data. In addition, students will learn how to make use of programming applications for investigating theories, exhibiting and reviewing data sets and identifying associations involving variables.

The materials for this course includes lecture notes, recitations, assignments, exams, that are available in downloadable PDF files. There is also a reading list and materials that require access to MATLAB software to access.
