To become a professional Architect, you'll need to earn a professional Architecture degree, either a Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) or a Master of Architecture (MArch). After graduation, you need to gain practical architectural experience through an internship. Finally you must pass the licensure examination from your state's licensing board. In addition, many states require an Architecture degree from a college or university that is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The University of Florida Arizona State University and Ohio State University are among the 117 institutions currently offering NAAB-accredited Architecture degree programs.

Details of Architecture Degree Programs

Bachelor of Architecture

The Bachelor of Architecture is a 5-year professional degree program that qualifies graduates for post-graduate Architecture internships and prepares them to take state licensure examinations. The curriculum includes methods and technologies of architectural design, as well as the social, technological and political forces that shape works of Architecture.

Bachelor of Science in Architecture

The Bachelor of Science in Architecture program is a pre-professional degree program that prepares students for graduate studies in Architecture or Architecture-related careers that do not require a professional degree or license. The B.S. degree program combines a core curriculum in architectural technology and practices with a selected minor discipline in an area such as art history or urban studies.

Master of Architecture

Candidates for the Master of Architecture degree can advance their technical and practical expertise in Architecture while broadening their understanding of the larger cultural and environmental issues at work in the field. The MArch qualifies students with non-Architecture bachelor's degrees for Architecture internships and licensure examinations. Students who have earned the BArch degree can complete the MArch degree program in two years or less, while students with bachelor's degrees in other fields usually need three years to graduate.

Doctor of Architecture

The University of Hawai'i at Manoa is the only U.S. school to offer an NAAB-accredited Doctor of Architecture (D.Arch) degree program. Students in the doctoral program choose an area of specialty that they can pursue in academic or professional capacities, such as urban design, landscape architecture or historic preservation.
