Expository Writing (Analyzing Mass Media): Course Specifics

How do the ideals presented in modern advertisements influence one's culture and sense of identity? How does viewing television affect critical thinking? The resources in this free OpenCourseWare are designed to stimulate thought and discussion about American mass media and its influence on society. Included with these resources are writing assignments from the original MIT course asking students to analyze media samples of their choosing. The purpose of these assignments was to encourage critical examination of mass media while also improving the student's academic writing skills. The course also offers guides on 'reading' the visuals used in photographs and film, along with a glossary of movie production terms. This course may have originally been part of a bachelor's in English program.

This course includes writing assignments, a list of readings and related study materials. To find these materials, visit the writing about mass media course page.
