Several options for Writing degree programs are available. Those interested in creative writing may find what they are looking for in a Master of Fine Arts program. At the same time, a bachelor's degree is all that is required to begin a professional Writing career in journalism or public relations. Many Ph.D. programs are available to those who are serious about the field. Arizona State, University of Florida and the University of Minnesota are three of the largest Writing schools in the country.

Details of Writing Degree Programs

Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing

Students earning a B.A. in Creative Writing study and practice the craft of composing fiction, nonfiction, screenplays, plays and poetry. Workshops are generally an integral part of the curriculum, where student Writing is critiqued by peers and faculty members.

Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing

Those earning a B.A. in Professional Writing prepare to work as writers in professional settings. Coursework includes Web authoring, professional writing, rhetoric, multimedia writing, grant and proposal writing, editing and publishing, publication project management and technical writing.

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

An program leading to an MFA in Creative Writing emphasizes advanced coursework in prose and poetry, literature, language and theory. Programs can take up to three years in length, and many require candidates to complete a book-length manuscript.

Master of Arts in Rhetoric & Professional Writing

This program prepares students for further study in a Ph.D. program and provides advanced skills for a technical and professional writing career. Coursework includes rhetorical theory and history, professional writing theory, advanced technical writing and rhetoric.

Doctor of Philosophy in Rhetoric & Writing

A Ph.D. program in Rhetoric and Writing prepares students for academic careers in college-level Writing programs. Students can choose from several areas of concentration, with the goal of learning to research, design and administer a variety of Writing projects and programs.
