RSS Feed

'Aerodynamics of Viscous Fluids' primarily teaches the flow of viscous fluids on the boundary layer. This free OpenCourseWare is offered to graduate students of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Students will examine variables that affect the viscosity of a fluid and its flow and how that flow influences drag and stall mechanisms.

Aerodynamics of Viscous Fluids: Course Description

The boundary layer theory is extremely important in the world of aerodynamics. This course will teach students to formulate equations of fluid flow based on heat transfer, compression, dimensions and turbulence. Dr. Ali Merchant and Professor Mark Drela will examine how the viscosity of fluids on the inner and outer boundary layer affects aerodynamic performance. The boundary layer is scrutinized in high-performance aircraft applications, such as commercial airplanes and sailplanes. This course also explores how excessive thickness in the boundary layer can increase pressure drag and deformation of a fluid on an aircraft's wing can cause skin friction drag. This class is presented in lecture format.

Lectures, study materials, suggested readings and assignments are available online for free for this course. If you would like to take advantage of this free course, visit the Aerodynamics of Viscous Fluids course page.
