Research Design for Policy Analysis and Planning: Course Description

Community development planning requires extensive research and policy analysis before any proposal could be implemented. That's why it's important to have a thorough understanding of strategies that emphasize the research process and incorporate all elements that would affect the community in consideration when developing planning proposals. This OpenCourseWare reading list includes a discussion of key ideas, themes and many controversies that impact planning research while drawing on diverse techniques and effective ways of organizing information to get the best results. Students begin this course with a look at research methods and develop ways to understand policy and how policies affect research proposals. This course teaches students how to use data for planning purposes while evaluating the validity and reliability of that data to ensure planning accuracy. Students analyze case studies and learn how to use the outcomes of previous proposals and their implementations to learn better and more effective methods for future development planning. This course material provides information for researching and developing planning proposals, based on materials used in an on-campus course led by MIT Professor JoAnn Carmin in 2007.

A reading list, links to online readings and assignment descriptions are available online for free. If you are interested in improving your research strategies for development proposals, visit the planning and policy analysis research course page.
