Throughout history, citizens have taken an role in shaping and improving government policy through active participation. This graduate-level OpenCourseWare from MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning analyzes the purpose and context of citizen participation within developing world regions. The course provides contextual definitions of citizen participation, community and governance. Students will also study literary works that analyze citizen participation and its influence during transitional moments in history, such as global economy shifts and the decentralization of governments. The course also features case studies from a variety of developing regions, including Latin America, Southern Asia and Africa for a current perspective of citizen participation and its outcomes.
