Political Economy of Development: Course Description

The Department of Political Science at MIT in Cambridge, MA, offers a graduate level course that analyzes how political economy in developing countries has affected poverty, industrial policy and economic growth. The course compares countries with economic growth to others that have become poorer. Students examine the varying results of globalization allowing some countries to rapidly advance while others remain underdeveloped. The course uses data to determine how social capital, the law, regime types, innovation and political and non-political organization affect development. Students also investigate the influence of international institutions, such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Political science professor Dr. Edward Steinfeld teaches this course. Access to readings and an Internet connection are required to take this free course.
