Network Analyst: Education and Job Training Requirements for Becoming a Network Analyst
Network Analysts are essential personnel who maintain large-scale computer networks. They are employed by nearly every large organization, from multinational corporations to governments to public schools. A college-level education in computers and networks is a great starting point for a career as a Network Analyst.
Network Analyst Career Summary
A Network Analyst is responsible for designing, assessing and maintaining all of the computer networks and systems within an organization. Their responsibilities cover wide area networks (WANs), local area networks (LANs), the Internet, Intranet, voicemail and e-mail systems. A Network Analyst evaluates the effectiveness of the current network and devises improvements to both software and hardware. Changes may include manipulating routers, cables and wireless adapters for hardware and installing network drivers and programs for software. Network Analysts will often work on teams with computer scientists, computer engineers, database administrators, network systems analysts, data communications analysts, network analysts and network security administrators.
Education Required to Become a Network Analyst
The required education for a Network Analyst depends on the type and complexity of the job. A lower-level job as a webmaster may require only a relevant certificate or associate's degree. However, most jobs require at least a 4-year bachelor's degree in a field related to information sciences, computer science or management information systems. Network Analyst positions within large corporations may have additional requirements that may include coursework in business and finance, and possibly, a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Job Training and Certifications Required to Become a Network Analyst
No specific training or certifications are required to become a Network Analyst. However, many employers require additional training and related certifications. Network Analysts are expected to have familiarity with all major software packages published by Microsoft, Oracle and Cisco. These companies offer certification exams and preparation classes and materials. Such exams cover specialty areas for Network Analysts, which may include security or databases. For example, Cisco Systems offers certifications in networking, design, internetwork, security and voice, while Oracle offers certification in Internet application development and Java development.
