Transit Management: Course Description
To make public transportation more effective, it's important to first understand factors that influence people to use it, such as urban growth, a shift in demographics, technological advances and transit system that meet public expectations. This OpenCourseWare provided by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)'s School of Engineering in Cambridge, Massachusetts, covers arguments in favor of public transportation and outlines strategies to make mass-transit systems work. Cost, marketing strategies, safety and public availability can all work to the advantage of transit management professionals to help improve the number of riders taking advantage of transit systems. Students will study different transit system examples to learn what works, what doesn't and ways to implement the strategies that do. Students will take into consideration the different transit organizational schemes and types of contracts and costs associate with each. MIT professor Nigel Wilson teaches this OpenCourseWare about the issues and concerns of transit management including economics, marketing and public interest.
