Teaching Languages: Language Awareness: Course Description

English speakers studying a foreign language already have knowledge of some of the new vocabulary. They just may not know it yet. Words in many languages trace their roots back to common Romance, Germanic or Greek languages. In 'Teaching Languages: Language Awareness,' foreign language teachers learn techniques to find words with common histories and use this knowledge to encourage and motivate students in learning new languages. Course materials provide information about the etymology of languages and give ideas on how to incorporate this knowledge into classroom learning. This intermediate-level course takes an estimated 12 hours to complete.

This free OpenCourseWare includes online notes, video animations, supporting documents, activities, a list of resources for further study, references and a discussion forum. To view the course materials and to learn more, visit the teaching language awareness class page.
