Statistical Mechanics II (Statistical Physics of Fields): Course Description

'Statistical Mechanics II: Statistical Physics of Fields' is the second of two graduate level classes for MIT Physics students. It covers fundamental principles of statistical mechanics (thermodynamics laws plus the concepts of entropy, heat and temperature) as well as modern themes in statistical mechanics (hydrodynamic limit and theories of classical field). Lectures cover the following topics: collective modes, Landau-Ginzburg model, universality, perturbation theory, lattice models, series expansions and two-dimensional films. Professor Mehran Kardar taught the original course in lecture format.

'Statistical Mechanics II: Statistical Mechanics of Fields' OpenCourseWare includes lecture notes, reading list, problem sets and exams plus solutions. To learn more about this exciting Physics course, please visit the field statistical mechanics course page.
