Special Education degree programs are intended for teachers interested in working with students with learning disabilities from kindergarten through high school. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs provide students with the knowledge and qualifications to work in these challenging jobs. Many schools throughout the country offer Special Education Teaching degrees, including the University of Florida, Arizona State University and Michigan State University. However, it is important to note that educational requirements differ vastly by state, as each state government sets its own standards for public school teachers.

Details of Special Education Teaching Degree Programs

Bachelor of Arts in Education

To earn the qualifications to work in Special Education, students must first earn a degree in education. The specific bachelor's degree depends on the school and the state, but generally, students can choose a degree covering early childhood, middle school or secondary education. Within those bachelor's degree programs, a school may offer additional coursework as an endorsement, certificate or specialization that fulfill the state requirement for Special Education teachers.

Master of Arts in Special Education

Unlike bachelor's degrees, master's degrees in Special Education are meant exclusively for teachers seeking a career in Special Education. Some programs are designed for students who already hold an undergraduate degree in teaching or an endorsement in Special Education, and others are for students new to an education curriculum. Such a degree may cover techniques for teaching students with different disabilities, assessing disabled students' needs and following contemporary theories in Special Education.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Special Education

A doctoral degree in Special Education is designed for students with an already expansive background in educating disabled students. Although this degree may greatly benefit a Special Education teacher's effectiveness in the classroom, these programs are not necessarily meant for teachers. A doctorate is necessary for those interested in research positions, leadership roles in federal, state and local educational agencies or policy organizations in Special Education Teaching. Students evaluate theories and policies for educating disabled students and learn methodologies for assessing the effectiveness of such programs.
