Planning in Transition Economies for Growth and Equity: Course Description
This free OpenCourseWare offered by MIT explores recent reform strategies employed by nations around the world because they've moved from centrally planned to market-oriented economies. Students taking this course consider important issues in economic transition, including the need to achieve balance among business, government and public interests. They study how economic growth and equity can work both for and against each other. This course also explores how transition to a market economy has reshaped cities, both for better and worse. MIT Professor Annette Miae Kim directs this course, which includes source material on changes in Eastern Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Asia from economic transition scholars and practitioners.
Discussion questions and examples of prior students' answers to these questions, lecture notes and readings are available for free online. If you're interested in taking this course, visit the planning in transition economies course page.
