Introduction to Syntax: Course Description

Offered by the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT in Cambridge, MA, this OpenCourseWare concentrates on how sentences are structured and that structure's effect on both the meaning of a sentence and an individual's comprehension of that meaning. The first course in a 2-part sequence, 'Introduction to Syntax' covers the grammar and structure of phrases and arguments. Students take this course to understand the progenitors of certain syntactic rules and follow their historical evolution to the present.

The course is taught by linguistics professors Dr. Michel DeGraff and Dr. Idan Landau. Understanding the free course material requires basic coursework in syntax.

Included in this OpenCourseWare is a syllabus, a list of recommended readings, assignments, a list of external links and a comprehensive download of the course material. Those interested in this free course should visit the Introduction to Syntax course page.
