MIT offers this OpenCourseWare, entitled 'Genomic Medicine,' which examines technical advances in genomic technologies and cutting edge computational methods in prognostics, diagnostics and therapeutics. This course will look at key issues regarding genomics and medicine, including such questions as 'What does a doctor need to know?' and 'What type of questions a physician should expect from clients?' A background in genetics and some computer programming skills are prerequisites for this course. Medical students, biomedical scientists, biomedical engineers and students completing degree programs, such as the Master of Science degree in Genetics, will benefit from this graduate-level course.

Genomic Medicine: Course Description

'Genomic Medicine' is a free course that is taught by a team of professors from the Department of Health Sciences and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The course focuses on genomics, the branch of medicine that studies the sequence and structure of DNA in biological organisms. The data gathered from this medical technology serves as the foundation for creating individual profiles necessary for the delivery of personalized medicine. Students will not only study important ideas in genomics, molecular biology and computational biology, but will also develop an understanding of the role of genomic medicine in the areas of preventative care and public health. Many of the lectures focus on case studies that demonstrates the real-world applications of genomic medicine. In addition, students will evaluate current legal, ethical and societal issues in the field of genomic medicine.

The materials for this OpenCourseWare includes lecture notes that are available in audio and PDF formats. There is also a reading list and guidelines for assignments and projects. If you are interested in taking this course, go to the genomic medicine course page.
