Equine vet techs work under the supervision of veterinarians in veterinary hospitals, assisting with surgeries and visiting farms, ranches and stables that house horses. In some cases, equine vet techs maintain long and varied hours because they frequently work in the field and attend to emergencies. Other equine vet techs choose to work in large hospitals where the burden of field calls is split among a larger staff. Most equine vet techs earn a degree in veterinary technology with an equine specialization or concentration.

Details of Equine Vet Tech Programs

Certificate in Veterinary Technology

Geared toward students who have already completed a degree program in another field, or for those who do not wish to earn a degree, a certificate program in veterinary technology prepares students for work assisting veterinarians in a variety of settings. Similar to a bachelor's degree program, a certificate program in veterinary technology may offer specializations or clerkships with an equine focus.

Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology

A 2-year associate's degree program in veterinary technology prepares students to work under and assist veterinarians. Students learn about large and small animal nursing, veterinary pharmacology and surgical nursing. Some programs offer a specialization in horses or large animals for students who wish to pursue careers as equine vet techs.

Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology

A Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology degree program prepares students for advanced positions in veterinary technology. Many programs, such as Michigan State University's veterinary technology bachelor's degree program, require clerkships to complete the course, and many schools offer equine clerkships for students who wish to become equine vet techs.
