Enrolling in a Computer Specialist Degree Program

Computer Specialist positions usually require an associate's or bachelor's degree in a related area, such as computer science, computer programming, information technology, information systems or computer networking. Students enrolling in these programs will find it helpful to have some previous coursework in math and a familiarity with using computers. Program admission requirements vary. They may be based on college entrance exam scores, high school grade point average or previous coursework in a related area. Students are usually required to submit exam scores and high school transcripts along with their application and fee.

Completing a Computer Specialist Degree Program

Associate's degree programs usually take two years to complete. Coursework will focus on concepts and techniques applied to computer information processing. Some programs focus on skills needed for certification in specific areas, such as Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification or CompTIA A+ and Network+ certification. Students are prepared for careers, such as computer support technicians, help desk technicians and computer applications specialists.

A bachelor's degree generally takes four years and provides a general liberal arts education along with the concepts and techniques applied to computer information processing. Coursework might include computer systems architecture, programming and programming languages, networking, data structures, database management and software engineering. Graduates are prepared for careers as computer support specialists or related careers, such as systems analysts or database administrators.
