This course, offered by the Department of Political Science at MIT in Cambridge, MA, examines the past, present and future of American foreign policy. The course examines different theories behind American foreign policy. These theories are examined within the context of current and historical episodes in American history. For example, students examine policy ideas that directed events, such as the Vietnam War and current national security issues. Students are asked to examine policies and discuss different interpretations and analyses. The course evaluates past foreign policy positions and compares them to current events and policy positions. Students learn historical investigative methodologies through research and case studies. Political science professor Dr. Stephen Van Evera teaches this course. To complete the course, students must have an Internet connection and access to the required readings.
