'Space Propulsion' is a free OpenCourseWare that covers the various components of rocket propulsion. Students in this class will study the physics and engineering for different types of engines used in space missions and determine, based on the mission's parameters, which rocket propulsion system is best suited for each operation. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology offers this free online course to graduate students of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Space Propulsion: Course Description

In this class, students will examine the three classes of engines used for space propulsion. Students must first study the mission criteria to determine if an electromagnetic, electrothermal or electrostatic rocket engine is necessary. In order to determine the correct propulsion system, students must learn the inner workings of each type of engine. Professor Manuel Martinez-Sanchez explains the various thrusts needed for lift-off, orbit and in-space propulsion and how the engineering and composition of each propulsion system fits different situations. 'Space Propulsion' is presented in lecture format.
