'Space Systems Engineering' takes students through the process of designing ground and space telescopes. This free OpenCourseWare examines the architectural features of building telescopes as well as the wide spectrum of policy issues that are involved. Space System Engineering: Course Description

Students taking this free MIT OpenCourseWare examine the design of deep space telescopes. Students will need to compile specific data about the telescope they choose, including scientific justification, observation characteristics, primary collector structure, observation sensitivity and program support. Professor Edward Crawley and Professor Olivier de Weck then ask their students to expound on the details of a top-rated telescope facility. This assignment will include developing a budget and timeline for the project, elucidating the human role in the venture and outlining the telescope design and architecture. This course is presented in lecture format.
