Situated along Boston's Charles River, Boston University is immersed in the history, culture and energy of a major urban center. The school offers 250 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and special degree programs based in the liberal arts, but also embracing the fine arts, engineering, business, science, medicine and the social sciences.
Boston University Overview
Boston University is deeply committed to a liberal arts education, believing that a rich background in math, science and the humanities prepares students to become well-rounded, true citizens of the world. The campus setting includes not only the turreted, ivy-covered stone halls and grassy lawns of traditional academia but also the busy commerce, dense neighborhoods and rich culture of a historic and vibrant city.
BU is a world-class private research and teaching institution, with 16,500 undergraduates and 13,100 graduate students. There are 487 classrooms and over 2,000 laboratories within 320 buildings on its 133-acre campus. Over 7,000 students are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, with 3,100 in the School of Management; another 4,000 are continuing their education in Metropolitan College programs.
Admissions and Enrollment Overview
BU students represent every U.S. state, over 100 countries and a wide variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Given this diversity, it's not surprising that there are nearly 500 social, sport, service, professional and cultural groups where like-minded students can get together and share their experiences.
Tuition and living expenses are always factors in selecting colleges, and Boston University provides financial aid to many of its students. In 2008, BU undergraduates were awarded $150 million in need-based grants and loans.
Campus Learning Environment and Facilities
There are 23 libraries on campus, and students have full access to another 16 academic and research libraries within the city of Boston's Library Consortium. BU's Mugar Library offers 2.8 million volumes, including over 100,000 rare and historical works, along with 56,000 periodical subscriptions. A new Life Science and Engineering building provides 187,000 square feet of labs, offices, meeting and classroom spaces, and an $82 million Photonics Center laboratory facility is dedicated to the development of light-based technologies.
There are ten dormitory-style residences, each housing between 280 and 1,800 students, many small dormitory-style brownstones, and several apartment-style residences. Most residences are coeducational. Residence fitness rooms located throughout the campus offer aerobic equipment and light weights, and a central fitness and recreation center has a larger selection of fitness facilities.
