This OpenCourseWare, 'Micro/Nano Processing Technology,' provided by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, examines the technology and concepts that underlie fabrication at the micro- and nano- scales. Micro/Nano Processing Technology: Course Description

Nanotechnology applies to the various disciplines of science that are involved with creating practical machines, materials, devices and systems by the manipulation of atoms at the molecular level. The unit of measurement for these products is 1000 nanometers or less. One nanometer is equal to a millionth of a millimeter and 10 nanometers is 1000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. 'Micro/Nano Processing Technology' is a free design fabrication course that is taught by Professor Martin Schmidt, Dr. Robert O'Handley and Susan Ruff of the MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Students will gain exposure to several concepts that are associated with micro/nano fabrication and its applications to multiple fields, including chemistry, science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and material science. The instructors deliver lectures on a wide variety of topics, such as diffusion, oxidation, photolithography and chemical vapor etchings. The course features a review of theories that formulate the foundation of basic processing techniques, as well as a primer on how to write technical reports. A design challenge assignment is intended to augment the students' learning experience.
