Communication for Managers: Course Description

The Sloan School of Management at MIT in Cambridge, MA, offers this OpenCourseWare class to teach managers and aspiring managers the most effective way to reach their audience. Students learn to analyze the context in which they are communicating and tailor themselves to their audience and objective to gain the most credibility. The course teaches students to gauge their style based on the requirements of the situation, which can range from direct to indirect and from informative to persuasive. The course materials include many charts, worksheets and graphs that help a manager decide on an appropriate style of communication. Lectures teach students how to create effective visual aids, handle questions, formulate answers and give and receive feedback. The course also emphasizes taking into account the audience, including its culture, region, religion, organization and values. Communications professors Dr. Joanne Yates and Dr. Neal Hartman teach this course. Students need an Internet connection and access to required readings.
