Architecture and Communication in Organizations: Course Description

The Sloan School of Management at MIT in Cambridge, MA, offers this OpenCourseWare class, teaching how architecture and organization with an office can acutely affect the success of a business. A successful spatial design of an office can increase its efficiency and effectiveness, while at the same time conveying a distinct message to clients and business partners. The course teaches students to measure the cost-effectiveness of design measures so outlaid costs will be recouped from the architectural improvements.

For instance, improvements that make better use of space help attract and retain employees and convey responsibility and consistency to clients and shareholders are often well worth the cost. The course's lecture notes include myriad layouts for different types of businesses and purposes. They also include case studies of how architecture enhanced businesses, complete with layouts and photos. This course is taught by business professors Dr. Diane Burton, Dr. Tom Allen and Dr. Frank Duffy. Students need an Internet connection and access to required readings.

This OpenCourseWare includes a syllabus, a required readings list, lecture notes and a comprehensive course download. Those interested in this free course should visit the architecture in organizations course page.
