Western Michigan University was founded as a regional teachers college in 1903. It has grown into an international public research institution offering 140 undergraduate, 67 master's and 29 doctoral programs.

Western Michigan University is ranked as one of only 76 public research institutions in the nation by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Its education, occupational therapy and speech pathology programs are among its highest ranked and most popular programs, but the university also offers business, engineering, health sciences and arts programs.

Admission into Western Michigan University is based upon high school transcript grades, as well as ACT or SAT scores. The school offers financial aid assistance, grants and scholarships, including the Medallion Scholarship, which covers nearly all four years of an undergraduate education.

Campus Facilities and Learning Environment at Western Michigan University

The main campus of Western Michigan University takes up 1,200 acres in downtown Kalamazoo and is home to 151 academic and residence buildings. The buildings include a large student recreation center, as well as state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories for chemistry, science research and health majors.

Most recently, the school installed a 200,000-square-foot College of Health and Human Services building and specialized labs for biofeedback, orthotics and motion research. Other high-end facilities at Western Michigan University include its libraries dedicated to archives and regional history collections, education, music and dance, and visual resources. The school also features a nationally recognized aviation school located just 30 miles away in Battle Creek, Michigan.
