Health Assessment and Promotion: Course Description

Obtaining an initial gauge of a patient's health is one of the most fundamental and important tasks a nurse performs. This OpenCourseWare from the University of Massachusetts Boston teaches students about the process of assessing a patient's physical condition.

Professor Leslie Sullivan demonstrates basic tests like the cardiac exam, respiratory exam and musculoskeletal exam in a series of videos offered in Real Media format. These are supplemented by slide presentations led by Professor Sullivan where students can find tips for taking a health history and learn to recognize signs of domestic violence.

Other presentations look at the anatomy of the breast and the structure of the neurological system. Also included with this class material are several guides to writing academic papers in the American Psychological Association style. This course can benefit students studying for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Videos, slide presentations and style guides are offered free with this course. To access these materials, visit the health assessment course page.
