Living with the Internet: Learning Online: Course Description

The number of opportunities to take classes online have grown in recent years. For those having little experience with computers, 'Living with the Internet: Learning Online' can illustrate aspects that accompany the online educational experience. Although taught at the undergraduate level, the course is not part of any one degree program and could serve as a supplement or review for any student. To start with, a look is taken at the health risks associated with long hours spent at a computer. The course advises taking frequent breaks to minimize those risks. Students engaged in online courses must learn how to manage their files, and this course offers a look at ways to do this. One section provides instructions on how to install Adobe Reader, a must-have for any online student. A brief look is taken at how learners fall into four categories - activists, reflectors, theorists and pragmatists - and the recommendation is made that to learn computer skills it is better to adopt an activist approach. Students can be introduced to skills invaluable to any person taking courses online, skills like navigation of the online course, managing files, using the screen as a source of notes, and others. This course consists of a series of readings and activities which are all free.

The course website contains all the course materials. If you'd like to take this course, visit the learning online course page.
