Students taking part in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) 'East Asia in the World' OpenCourseWare project will learn about the relationships between East Asia and other countries in the period between 1500 and 2000 AD. The primary focus of the course will be on Japan and China, but other countries will be discussed. This free course is for students seeking a History degree.

East Asia in the World: Course Description

'East Asia in the World' is taught by Professor Peter C. Perdue and is designed for students with an interest in the history and development of East Asia. The course focuses on Japan and China in East Asia, but other countries are covered as well, including Vietnam and Korea. Relationships between East Asia and other countries are examined closely. The course is primarily concerned with how military, commercial, diplomatic and cultural relationships shaped the development and future of East Asia. Students can complete three papers, a midterm exam and a final exam.
