Introduction to Computational Molecular Biology: Course Description

Molecular biology is a discipline of bioinformatics, which is the application of computer science and information technology to the study of the molecular characteristics of living organisms. 'Computational Molecular Biology' is a free course taught by Professor Ross Lippert from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Mathematics. The objective of the course is to teach students introductory computational concepts that are geared toward developing their knowledge and understanding of the relationship between cellular systems. The course is divided into a series of lecture categories, including an introduction to biology, the enumerative approach, computer programming and graph theory. Students study a wide range of topics, including algorithms, partial digestion problems, local and global alignment and genomic and SBH graphs. There is also a review of hidden Markov models, clustering techniques, random projections and MCMC and Bayesian networks.

Materials for this course includes lecture notes, a list of assignments and sample projects that are available as downloadable PDFs. There is also a list of readings and links to related resources.
