BA Degree in Library Science: Career Summary

Career options for graduates with a BA degree in Library Science are more limited than those available to graduates who continue their education and complete a master's degree program in Library Science. Most graduates of a BA program in Library Science work as library technicians. Library technicians perform many of the duties required in libraries, such as processing invoices, coding and cataloging library documents and supervising support staff.

BA Degree in Library Science for Research Librarians

In its most basic form, Library Science is concerned with obtaining and distributing information. A library technician must be familiar with a wide knowledge base, and must know the tools available to help access the information. Research or reference librarians work in venues such as businesses, schools and religious organizations. Often, a graduate with a BA in Library Science works under a librarian holding a master's degree in Library Science. A library technical worker performs many of the public contact and collection management duties, freeing the librarian to focus on budgets, administration, grant writing and complicated research duties.

Bachelor of Arts in Library Science for Archivists

Archivists have the responsibility of analyzing, cataloging, displaying and maintaining collections and individual objects to be available to the public and for researchers. Archival collections can include audio and video tapes, film, CD's, DVD's, papers and books. Archives are kept in long-term storage facilities and must be protected against insects, weather and environmental issues that can damage or destroy items with historical or monetary value.
