Race, Immigration, and Planning: Course Description
Immigration dramatically impacts American society, and urban planning efforts are affected by our constantly changing cities, creating wide diversity of cultures, traditions and economic impact. This OpenCourseWare from MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning analyzes that immigration experience. Students examine the role and responsibility of community planning, considering citizens and the undocumented, all while analyzing the reasons behind immigration and common characteristics of settlement patterns. Students will learn how immigration has changed planners' approach to urban development, along with the bias and racism inherent in many peoples' conception of immigrants, while discussing the impact of inequalities in gender, race and political rights. Professors J. Phillip Thompson and Alethia Jones, MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning lecturers, led this course on MIT's campus in 2005.
A reading list, lecture notes with discussion questions and past students' assignment overviews are all included free online. If you are interested in taking this course about the influences of race and immigration on community planning, visit the immigration and urban planning course page.
