Reading Visual Images: Course Description

'Reading Visual Images' discusses the potential uses of photographs as a data source in social science research. Units in the course cover both the promise of photograph analysis and potential shortcomings. Among the shortcomings, the OpenCourseWare concentrates on the need to consider the context of the photo when analyzing it for potential social clues. Analytical perspectives presented include photography as an accurate representation of events or as a symbolic representation of such sociology concepts as status within the hierarchy. This reading-oriented OpenCourseWare focuses on several key ideas in photography analysis. This introductory course is estimated to take approximately eight hours to complete. A discussion forum on 'Reading Visual Images' is available to registered OpenLearn students.
