Journalism is a popular, yet competitive, degree option for college students. Despite a struggling industry, students continue to choose journalism as a field of study. Three U.S. colleges that offer programs in journalism are the University of Central Florida, the University of Texas at Austin and Michigan State University.

Associate of Arts Degree in Journalism

An associate's degree program in journalism introduces students to the basics of reporting and other communication disciplines. Graduates can look for work with newspapers, magazines or broadcast mediums or continue their education in a bachelor's degree program.

Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism

Most working journalists have at least a bachelor's degree. Bachelor's degree programs in journalism train students in reporting, writing and editing, while introducing them to other areas of journalism, like journalistic ethics and media law.

Master of Arts Degree in Journalism

Many master's degree programs in journalism focus on specialized areas within the field, such as science or medical journalism. Graduate students typically study both the theory and practice of journalism and other forms of mass communication.

Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) in Journalism

Most doctoral programs in journalism are research-based, allowing students to gain advanced knowledge in their field and possibly prepare to work as professors. Ph.D. students conduct original research and usually come from experience-rich backgrounds.
