Enrolling in a Guidance Counselor Degree Program

Graduate degree programs in Guidance Counseling are offered at many colleges and universities. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs www.cacrep.org, provides a listing of accredited programs. Programs generally require completion of a bachelor's degree and may consider GRE or Miller Analogies Test scores in their admissions decisions. Some programs require students to have teacher certification and one or more years of teaching experience.

Completing a Guidance Counselor Degree Program

Master's degree programs in Guidance Counseling require approximately 45 hours of coursework. The coursework covers counseling practices, theories and specific areas of specialization, such as gifted students and diverse populations. Topics include abnormal psychology, group therapy, legal and ethical issues, psychological testing and developing school guidance programs.
