The flagship campus of the State University System of Florida is the University of Florida, located in Gainesville. This college offers over 100 undergraduate majors and almost 200 graduate degree programs to over 50,000 students each year.
University of Florida Overview
The University of Florida (UF), founded in 1853, has operated in its present location since 1906. UF is considered a 'Public Ivy' university, a university that provides an Ivy League education at public school affordability. The university is ranked 47th on U.S. News & World Report's 2010 best colleges list and has the sixth-largest student population of any university in the country.
The University of Florida offers bachelor's, master's, doctoral and first professional degrees through 16 colleges. According to The Princeton Review, the most popular majors at UF are political science and government, psychology and finance.
Admissions and Enrollment Overview
The undergraduate application for the University of Florida includes a family and personal resume section, in which students describe their extracurricular activities, honors and awards, financial background and other relevant information. General application information, educational background, residency information and a personal essay are also required.
The university requires all applications to be submitted online. Applicants to fine arts programs, such as music and theater, are also required to undergo an audition. In addition to federal funding, UF offers numerous scholarships in athletics, academics and merit, as well as major-specific and residency scholarships.
Campus Learning Environment and Facilities
As one of the largest research university's in the country, the University of Florida is home to numerous institutes and research centers, including the Center of Excellence for Regenerative Health Biotechnology, the Emerging Pathogens Institute and the UF Genetics Institute. The University of Florida has ten libraries, which collectively house over 5.3 million books and journals, seven million microfilms and numerous digital collections and resources.
Most classes at the university are limited to 25 students and the student-to-faculty ratio is about 20:1. There are over 170 classrooms and laboratories and UF is continually improving its academic and research centers, including opening the 280,000-square-foot University of Florida Cancer and Genetics Research Complex, as well as completing a new biomedical sciences building.
