Experimental Molecular Biology II: Course Description

Apoptosis, or PCD, within cells of the genus Drosophila serves as the focal point for this OpenCourseWare. Students will examine the methods to explore this concept, which include the use of DNA damaging agents, chemicals or drugs. Professor Christopher Burge, Professor David Sabatini, Dr. Marilee Ogren-Balkema and Dr. Alice Rushforth lead this lab-based OpenCourseWare. Lab material begins with 1-step and 2-step reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Other lab protocols pertain to such topics as in vitro transcription, basic bioinformatics and double-stranded RNA transfection. Students can also view online videos that outline PCD in mammalian cells.
