Digital Anthropology: Course Description

'Digital Anthropology' is an interdisciplinary course offered by MIT's Media Arts and Sciences (MAS) Department. It is designed for graduate students from the MAS program, but students enrolled in MIT's Sloan School of Business and Electrical Engineering Department can take the course as well. 'Digital Anthropology' introduces students to the use of digital artifacts (i.e. a mobile phone) to measure and observe human systems engaged in complex social interactions. A large part of the course focuses on observing the societal effects of new technologies like computing that is human centered (Project Oxygen), communication tools that is all-in-one (Spotme) and e-tablets (paperless classrooms) on subject populations. The other part of the course (technology testbeds) involves watching usage patterns, judging the appeal and tracking social impact of new technology (usually a prototype). MIT's Toshiba Professor Alex Pentland was the instructor of this program given in a lecture-seminar format.

'Digital Anthropology' OpenCourseWare users can access lecture notes, valuable project proposals and online resources provided by Professor Alex Pentland. To learn more about this free course from MIT, please visit the study of anthropology course page.
