Photography and Truth: Course Description

This OpenCourseWare from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology focuses on photographs as tools, art and communication in anthropology. In anthropology, photographs serve many purposes. They may be primary data, signs of a disappearing cultures, the result of fieldwork, illustrations in a book and even art. The subjects covered in this course include social practices of photography; the relationships among photography, art and ethnographic documentation and the purposes of a museum photograph and its caption. The class includes a case study about taking pictures of women in North Africa and the Middle East. MIT Professor Susan Slyomovics teaches this free undergraduate anthropology course.
