Community Growth and Land Use Planning: Course Details
Organized along a rough chronology following the process of planning and submitting a design proposal for a municipal development project--an integral part of the original MIT seminar--this OpenCourseWare provides a theoretical foundation and practical example of the municipal development process appropriate for a city planning novice. While some prior study in urban design is helpful in understanding the academic components of the course, no practical experience is necessary to reap the benefits of this OpenCourseWare seminar. Lecture notes focus on zoning fundamentals and modern developments in zoning practices using examples from towns near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus in Cambridge. The included final presentations from the MIT course's client project cover all aspects of a community growth and redevelopment project and supply an additional overview of all aspects to be considered in land use planning, including transportation, green spaces and commercial use. The reading list for the OpenCourseWare covers broad city planning concerns like sprawl and traffic management, as well as finer points like incorporating ecology and landscaping into a design plan and proposal. While specific examples in the curriculum are confined to neighborhood-level projects, the concepts apply to regional- and state-level land use planning and may be useful to all degrees of land use planning professionals. Community Growth and Land Use Planning is part of the Master in City Planning degree program and was taught by MIT associate professors Terry Szold and Eran Ben-Joseph.
This seminar includes a reading list, selected readings and lecture notes for download, related resources links and examples of student projects. If you are interested in this course, visit the land use planning page.
