Communicating with Data: Course Description

Developments in management science, including the use of data modeling and new software systems, have introduced valuable tools for business and management professionals. In the 'Communicating with Data' OpenCourseWare, students study how to effectively incorporate fact-based information into management practices. The course suggests that the role of managers is not simply to absorb information and make decisions, but to create a meaningful interpretation of numbers and communicate that information in terms of business goals, alternative actions, contingencies and uncertainties. The course seeks to teach quantitative decision making as a way of thinking. Using real-world examples of errors and biases, the course shows students how to interpret and apply data in a realistic business context. This graduate-level course, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, is taught by Professor John Carroll.

Lecture notes, assignments and sample exams are available for download on the course website, as well as a list of suggested readings. To learn more or to take the free course, visit the data and effective management communication course page.
