Introduction to World Music: Course Description
This free Musical Arts course exposes students to musical traditions across the world. The beginning of this course introduced common elements of music, such as rhythm, tone and instrument styles. Once students had a grasp of analyzing musical structures, the class focused on regional styles of music. Students studied the relationship between music and culture in ethnic traditions selected from the Middle East, West Africa, Eastern Europe, India and Southeast Asia. By the end of this course, students had a rich understanding of the selected cultures' music, including knowledge of instruments specific to certain regions, the role music plays in rituals and celebrated musicians and performers of world music. Professor George Ruckert taught this lecture format course. The class does not require previous experience studying and analyzing music. This course is part of a Musical Arts curriculum.
