Technology and Change in Rural America: Course Description
'Technology and Change in Rural America' examines the impact of science and technology on rural food production both in America and internationally. Professor Deborah Fitzgerald of MIT developed an extensive reading list of anthropological essays and historical texts for use in the course. These readings discuss the interaction between science and agriculture and their changes over time. The readings are grouped under broad topics, which include geography and destiny, colonial concerns, the South and slavery, labor and management and the farm crisis and agricultural policy. Students will examine changes at both the macro and micro level, allowing them to analyze the effects of technology on agriculture in rural society during the last 100 years. The course was developed for students with the ability to synthesize and criticize texts at the graduate level.
The OpenCourseWare includes an extensive reading list. To learn more, visit the 'Technology and Change in Rural America' course page.
