Engineering Biomedical Information: From Bioinformatics to Biosurveillance: Course Description
This OpenCourseWare is an introductory course in bioinformatics as it relates to the intersection of computer science and biomedical research. Genetics and the human genome are a central theme in the course, but telemedicine and medical decision making are also covered. The course also focuses on professional issues, including patient confidentiality and public health. As a primer, students receive an overview of genomics and the other topics needed to fully grasp the concepts and applications of bioinformatics. Professors Isaac Kohane and Marco Ramoni of MIT teach this lecture-based course. Students are encouraged to refer to the textbook, Medical Informatics: Computer Applications in Health Care and Biomedicine, by Gio Wiederhold, and Lawrence M. Fagan.
