Energy Systems and Economic Development: Course Description

Energy and economic development go hand in hand. As a nation grows, develops and prospers, its wealth allows for thorough development of energy infrastructures. Furthermore, the policies and technologies a country chooses to implement shape energy development in that country. This course looks at the global energy-sector trend towards privatization and deregulation with a particular focus on electricity and natural gas. In addition, the course examines energy alternatives and the economic and environmental implications they present. The course looks specifically at the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) region and the restructuring and privatization of various nations energy sectors. Dr. Richard D. Tabors taught the original engineering graduate-level MIT course in a lecture-style format through the Engineering Systems Division.

'Energy Systems and Economic Development' OpenCourseWare allows users to access some lecture notes and a course reading list. This course is free and you can find out more about it at the restructuring and privatization of energy sector in developing nations course page.
